Winter tyres in the Netherlands — really needed?
The Netherlands has no winter-tyre law, but plenty of wet roads and regular frost. Numbers next to advice.

People often ask us: are winter tyres really needed in the Netherlands? Legally, no. Practically, it depends on where and how you drive.
What do winter tyres do differently?
Softer rubber stays supple below 7°C. The tread has more sipes that grip wet and icy roads. That mainly produces shorter braking distances, not more traction.
All-season as a compromise
For the average Dutch driver mainly in town, a good all-season with 3PMSF marking is a fine compromise. Slightly less grip than winter in frost, slightly less than summer on dry roads — but no swap-over hassle.
